Healthcare Solutions through Social Media and Cell Phones

The Nova Southeastern University’s College of Pharmacy has launched the very first center in America for Consumer Health Informatics and Research which delivers solutions for health care, via social media and through the cell phones.

The center has mission of making new discoveries in health using the consumer’s health information which is the integration of the patient’s preferences, technology and behaviors in improving health. The center would be using the participatory medicine models to gaining insight of the patient’s habits, their trends in the health care. The discoveries will be used in helping public in making better informed personal health-care decision.

Center has plans that shall deliver information on health and well being. For example it shall be able to give tips on managing diabetes via social media and the cell phones. Also the center will analyze how the health interventions deliver on social media and the mobile phones in helping the patients manage many of the chronic health conditions like hypertension, obesity, diabetes etc.

The associate professor of the College of Pharmacy, and the director of the center, Kevin A. Clauson who is Pharm.D have said that “We are hoping to unlock a treasure trove of information about patient health,Patients are turning to the Internet in record numbers to look for answers to health-related questions and making treatment decisions based on what they find. The center plans to use technologies to deliver information to help e-Patients make better decisions.”

The project will be known as mHealth, research effort of the center is underway with cell phones health projects. This includes the study for measuring impact of the text messaging as well as health literacy on medication in observance in patients having type 2 diabetes.

Adding further Kevin A. Clauson said “Cell phone ownership is particularly high in Hispanics and African Americans, which offer tremendous opportunity to customize mobile phone health interventions for these historically underserved patient populationsâ€?. Including the minorities in mind, the center will plan the informatics.

Moreover, the center plans to serve as the training institute, for students, and residents as well other fellows, all will have opportunity which directly involves in cutting the edge research and also initiate academic involvement in the consumer health informatics.
