Home Remedies for Constipation in Babies

Constipation is one of the common problems faced by kids and is concern for parents. Constipation in kid’s problem should be handled by Pediatrician that is a doctor which has expertise in Medicine for children. Constipation in babies means consistency of stool and not its frequency. New born babies pass stool often after each feeding. Frequency of the bowel movements does subside after two months of age. Constipation in babies mean infrequent passing of hard stool and it seems the kid is experiencing pain while passing the stool. You must visit a pediatrician in case you are new parents. But certain home remedies are also affective in helping to ease the problem of the constipation.

Common home remedies for the Constipation problem in Babies:

Prune Juice: Prune juice diluted with water is one of the common treatment given to those babies who are older than six weeks. Give one ounce of water and mix it with one ounce of the prune juice and feed the baby twice in a day. This Prune juice is not a substitute. You must continue to feed baby with breast milk or formula milk. Though it may not seem to palatable, but don’t add any sugar. Babies suck the juice as they have it as natural reflex.

Important advice you should not use any form of laxatives to baby who has problem of constipation. Babies who are under six weeks of age, first it is better to consult a pediatrician. Glycerin suppository can be given to stimulate and soften the stool.

When babies are introduced with solid foods, experience of the constipation problem is common. The baby’s digestive system can react to new food differently and the bowel habits and bowel movement can be affected. This is seen in babies who are of five months and above that is time when new solid foods are introduced. Baby food with rice cereals, bananas etc. are can be constipating and foods which has apricots, prunes, and pears are effective and not constipating. You must continue with the breast feeding and bottle feeding also.

Babies who are on breast feeding don’t experience constipation but they too can have this problem. Constipation is common with bottle fed- formula fed babies. Switching infant formula is helpful in case, for prevention and also to relieve it. You should also keep a check on urination. See that kid’s urination has not decreased. You must feed baby water more often. Massage tummy, and warm light compression are very useful home remedies for constipation in babies.

Call immediately to doctor if you see blood in stool.
