Obama’s Health Care law – Will It Make Catholics Use Birth Control?

Obama’s health care law which allows insurance plans cover the contraceptives services, rule that administration has announced with the Affordable Care Act 2010 which came ten days ago has stirred priests from Catholic churches.

Priests have said that without exemptions to the Catholic linked institutions; this new Obama health care law is violating religious liberty of Catholic people. This has stirred up much new opposition from religious group and also from Obama’s rivals making it political sensitive issue as well.

Church of Catholics doesn’t believe in allowing women to use any form of birth control methods. This has led to many issues and debates in past and also in present case scenario.

Institutions which have link with the Catholic Church like schools, hospitals have no exemption from this rule in which health insurance plans need to cover contraceptive services. Many priests have delivered statements regarding opposition to this rule. They believe that its forcing on members of church, which has to oppose use of birth control in offering for it or pay for it in the health plans.

Alexander Sample who is Bishop of Marquette in Mich, has said that “Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those ‘services’ in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies. The rule doesn’t apply to houses of worship, but does apply to church-affiliated hospitals, colleges, and social service agencies.”

President Obama’s Secretary of the Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius has said that “move strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services.”. the rule is to ensure that all women get access to birth control without an co-pays and deductible. Further adding she said “Scientists have abundant evidence that birth control has significant health benefits for women and their families, It is documented to significantly reduce health costs, and is the most commonly taken drug in America by young and middle-aged women.”

The issue no doubt is sensitive on religious as well as on the political scenario with upcoming of elections in US. But woman is not a machine to produce children and all women have right to use birth contraceptives which are beneficial to their health, this should be choice made by woman and not by religion or political reasons. This law is for health and not against any Christianity or any other religion. Contraceptives are used by many women and it should be made a big issue but rather left on woman to decide whether they want to use contraceptives or not.
