What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a collection of cancer cells that arises from the cells of the breast and forms malignant tumor. Breast cancer mostly occurs in women; however it has affected several men as well. In this article we will talk about breast cancer in women.

Types of breast cancer

There are various kinds of breast cancer. Few are common ones, while others are combinations of two or more cancers. Mentioned below are common types of cancer:

  • Ductal carcinoma in situ : It is one of the most common types of noninvasive breast cancer. It is not much spread and has a very high cure rate.
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma : Initially, this cancer occurs in the milk glands of the breast. Approximately 10 per cent of invasive breast cancers are nothing but invasive lobular carcinoma.
  • Invasive ductal carcinoma : Initially, this cancer occurs in the duct of the breast. Later, it grows in the surrounding tissues. Invasive ductal carcinoma is one of the most common forms of breast cancer. Almost 80 per cent of invasive breast cancers are nothing but invasive ductal carcinoma.

  • Inflammatory breast cancer : Due to inflammatory breast cancer the color of the breast’s skin appear red. It feels warm as well. These changes are caused due to the obstruction of lymph vessels created by the cancer cells.
  • Paget’s disease : Paget’s cancer occurs in the ducts of the breasts and later spreads to the nipple as well as its surrounding area. The cancer increases the crusting and redness of the area around the nipples.
  • Triple-negative breast cancers : Triple-negative breast cancer is a subtype of invasive breast cancer. The cancer occurs due to the lack of estrogen and progesterone receptors in the cell and shortage of a specific protein (HER2). Triple-negative breast cancers occurs more in African-American women and younger women.
  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma : Adenoid cystic carcinoma cancer has both cystic and glandular features. This kind of cancer doesn’t spread easily as well as has a good prognosis.

Various risk factors are responsible for the increasing chances of developing breast cancer. Few of the risk factors of the development of a cancer cells are commonly known. Moreover, the scientists are still doing research for specific causes of cancer.
