World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day: Advocate for the Relief of Human Sufferings

May 8, 2012: The people across the world celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on 8th May every year in order to recognise the efforts of National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies across the world to advocate for the relief of human suffering from disease, post war consequences, disaster, etc. As 8th May is the birth anniversary of the founder of Red Cross Mr. Henry Dunant, the volunteers of the Red Cross as well as general public observe this day as World Red Cross Day to give a tribute to Mr. Dunant (the founder of world’s largest humanitarian movement 20th century). https://www.sisi-de.com/rhino-correct/ Rhino-Correct.

The first Red Cross Day was celebrated on May 8, 1948 globally and since then, the volunteers of Red Cross have been celebrating this day. The name of this day witnessed changes for several years until 1984, when the day was officially declared as “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day”.

According to Red Cross, this day remembers and recognises: “Worldwide effort to advocate for the relief of human suffering, whether from disease, famine, disaster, or war.” Thus, the humanitarian support and relief from disaster is provided by the Red Cross globally, wherever required. The theme of the Red Cross this year is again – “Together for Humanity”.

8th May World Red Cross Day 2012

With its presence in over 170 countries, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have the largest humanitarian relief network today. Its existence can be marked from the time when the Czech Republic and Slovakia were one state – Czechoslovakia in 1922. With millions of Red Cross volunteers across the world, the non-profit organisation initiated as humanitarian movement has managed to bring world together for humanity.

The successful running of the organisation can be credited to Red Cross’ clear vision:

The vision of the Red Cross is to:

  1. Initiate efforts for the reduction of deaths because of illnesses.
  2. Alleviate the impact of any kind of injury and death due to any sort of disaster.
  3. Cause a decline in public health emergencies’ rate.
  4. Empower the Red Cross and civil society along with local communities in order to ensure quick response to emergencies and vulnerable situations.
  5. Reinstitute human dignity at all the time.

  1. Support the Red Cross and its programs or efforts
  2. Send donation to Red Cross Society near you
  3. Donate Blood on 8th May.
  4. Become a volunteer of Red Cross
  5. Appreciate and recognise the efforts of the Red Cross volunteers.
